FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 14, 2014
PRIDE President Geoff Shelden and Project Leader Don
Scott are pleased to announce our application for a small urban park to be
located in the metered parking space at 15330 La Cruz in front of the Garden
Café has been approved by the Department of Transportation under a new city
program named People Street, now part of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Great Streets initiative. This program is funded by Proposition R and
managed by the DOT to bring about change to the way we use streets.

Studies have shown accidents drop and business activity
increases when these traffic calming facilities are in place. After studying similar facilities in other
cities and monitoring two test sites in Los Angeles for twelve months, the city
wants to triple the number parklets by the end of the year. DOT spent the last
two months evaluating many applications. City engineers and other professionals
have determined we meet all requirements including health and safety, and chose
our site above others.
The parklet is designed to replace the parking space with
a curb level platform surrounded by disguised protective barriers that will
seat approximately eight people. It is a public space where eating is allowed
but table service is not.
This site was chosen because the area attracts many
locals from nearby offices and schools. With help from local architect Rich
Wilkin and property owner Elliot Zorensky and partners, PRIDE developed a plan
that followed the parameters laid out in a comprehensive manual now available
on the internet. By following the rules
and putting these community assets together, PRIDE was able to win this
competition and bring home one of only four parklets allowed in this round of
awards.
PRIDE is being asked to complete installation by the end of
2014 so time is short. A public comment
period will be posted along with a special web site for this purpose hopefully by
the end of July.
PRIDE is responsible for all installation and maintenance
costs. A maintenance plan is already in
place and we are well on our way to raising the estimated $37,000 needed for
materials and labor.
PRIDE is a community based 501c3 dedicated to improving
the quality of life in the Palisades as well as our business district. We are proud of the work we have accomplished
in the past including new trees on Swarthmore, the many park benches, hanging
flowers and trash receptacles around town and multiple flowered median
strips. Above all we will continue to
honor past donors with suitable memorials and finding additional community
improvement projects.
We were responding to a call from Councilmember Mike
Bonin asking for help bringing People Street to his district. His encouragement and staff dedication to
this concept inspired us to press forward and make this happen.
